Knowing what ball to use makes Pokemon catching a breeze.

Stock up on Nest Balls, which received a massive buff in this generation. It's now more effective than Ultra Ball until level 31, and can be bought early on in the Route 2 Shop.

Quick Ball increase catch rate 5 times when used at the beginning of the fight. In comparison, bringing Pokemon's HP to 1 only increase catch rate by 3 times. This means you're almost always better off using a Quick Ball first, as oppose to using a Great Ball after wearing down the Pokemon. You can find Quick Balls in store in Route 8 Pokecenter Shop.

Catch Mechanics for the main series is a bit involved:

Roughly speaking, it depends on:

  • Pokemon's base catch rate (3 to 255 out of 255)
  • Ball factor: 1x to 8x (below)
  • Health: 1x (full health) to 3x (fainting)
  • Pokemon Status:
    2x: Sleep, Freeze
    1.5x: Paralyze, Poison, Burn
